Sydney aged care COVID-19 outbreak spreads, three residents test positive - ABC News

Three residents at a Sydney aged care home where two workers tested positive for COVID-19 last week have contracted the virus.

All three residents were fully vaccinated.

However, two of them were transferred from Summit Care's Baulkham Hills facility to Westmead Hospital last night as a precaution.

In a statement, Summit Care said the residents weren't showing symptoms and were in "good spirits".

"With 96 per cent of our 149 residents vaccinated and the measures we are taking to ensure their health and safety, we are confident about the outcome," a spokesperson said.

The facility is now in lockdown.

It is being deep cleaned, and staff and residents are being swabbed for COVID regularly.

The residents' families have been informed and are being given regular updates.

The current COVID-19 outbreak began when a limousine driver working at the airport beame infected. The so-called Bondi cluster has now spread beyond the eastern suburns to Western Sydney.

Two workers at the Summit Care facility have tested positive for COVID-19, as NSW grapples with an outbreak of the ultra-transmissable Delta strain of the virus.

The workers were among eight infections linked to an unvaccinated student nurse who contracted COVID-19 and worked at two Sydney hospitals.

"The fact that the affected residents are showing no symptoms at this stage shows their early vaccinations have worked," the spokesperson said.

"We continue to work closely with the [Health] department and taking all of the necessary measures to ensure the health and safety of our residents and staff.

"We thank them and their families for their ongoing co-operation and support."

Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour have been in lockdown for just over a week, due to the COVID-19 outbreak in NSW.

Social distancing restrictions have also been imposed on all other areas in the state.

There have been 261 locally acquired COVID-19 infections in NSW since the limousine drive tested positive last month.

The Bondi, which stands at 206 cases, has been NSW's largest of the pandemic.
