NSW AstraZeneca COVID vaccine available from pharmacies in ‘vast array’ of Sydney suburbs, says health chief Kerry Chant - 7NEWS.com.au

NSW health chief Dr Kerry Chant has flagged that pharmacies in a “vast array” of southwestern Sydney suburbs can offer residents the AstraZeneca jab - and she said appointments were available “today”.

Speaking at the daily COVID case update alongside NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian, Chant urged those living in southwestern Sydney to take up the opportunity to get jabbed.

Her plea came as the state recorded another 145 cases of COVID - of which 51 were infectious in the community.

“Our future is driven by our vaccination coverage,” Chant told reporters.

“Clearly the vaccines have two-fold protection. Firstly, if you’re vaccinated they protect you, but they also have an impact on protecting others.

“If you’re infected and you’re vaccinated, you’re less likely to pass it onto others.”

Chant said that while vaccines weren’t the “whole answer” to ending the COVID crisis at the present time, as a lockdown was still needed, they were “part of the answer”.

“I would urge everyone in the community to please come forward and get vaccinated,” she said. “There are a number of pharmacies in southwestern Sydney that will be able to administer AstraZeneca today.”

Find your local pharmacy

The health chief said pharmacies offering AstraZeneca were available in Bankstown, Bass Hill, Cabramatta, Carnes Hill, Casula, Liverpool, Greenacre and Panania - a “vast array” of suburbs.

“I urge everyone to go onto the website and find their local pharmacy that has access to the vaccine and go forward and talk to their pharmacist about getting vaccinated,” Chant said.

The medical expert said she found it “quite distressing” how few residents over the age of 60 and 70 authorities had “managed to reach” with the message.

“Anyone who is over 60 or over 70 should be going to their doctor as a matter of urgency, or their pharmacist ... and get a dose of vaccine and please keep yourself safe,” she said.

She added that after getting a jab, “you don’t see any effect for about two to three weeks”.

“We all have a collective responsibility to take up vaccination,” Chant concluded.

“We have had the opportunity to get an AstraZeneca shot for a long time and what I am urging the community is to play their part, protect themselves, protect their loved ones and take up the opportunity and we will have a plan for how we can use available Pfizer doses in the best way possible to protect the health of the community.”

Health Minister Greg Hunt echoed Chant’s message later in the day, saying it was critical to follow medical advice on the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which was available in enough supply to meet “all the demand across Australia”.

“The important message which comes out of ATAGI’s revised advice for people in Sydney is that people of all ages have a clear message - the benefits of AstraZeneca outweigh the risks,” he told reporters on Monday.

Hunt also took aim at protesters and people spreading misinformation online.

“Frankly, I condemn it in the same way that I condemn the protests on the weekend because they were endangering people.”
