What are the differences between SARS-CoV-2 vaccines?
Which COVID-19 vaccines work best? Using a computer-assisted model, mRNA vaccines and vector vaccines have been compared in an ongoing study with vaccine avoidance.
In the study, a research team from the University of Cincinnati looked at the benefits of mRNA vaccines and adenovirus vector vaccines over complete lack of COVID-19 vaccination. The results of the study were published in the English-language journal “Medical Decision Making Policy & Practice”.
Effects on life expectancy and quality
The analytical decision-making model used in the study uses a quality-adjusted life expectancy metric, the researchers say. The quality-adjusted life expectancy takes into account the survival of the affected person on the one hand, and the quality of life on the other hand, according to the team.
Life expectancy and quality of life are influenced, for example, by hospital stays due to COVID-19 and long-term complications after infection, which are also commonly known as COVID long, reports study author Professor Dr. Mark Eckman of the University of Cincinnati.
The model used for the study simulated the health consequences as well as the life expectancy and quality of life effects of COVID-19 vaccination for a 65-year-old using available data. In addition, it was analyzed what it would be like if this person was not vaccinated at all.
Longer life expectancy after vaccination
The researchers come to the conclusion that vaccination with an mRNA vaccine (manufacturer Biontech / Pfizer or Moderna) gives a net lifespan of 7.4 days compared to people who have not been vaccinated at all. The effect was also high with the vector vaccine (only the vaccine from the manufacturer Johnson & Johnson was taken into account). Compared to the J&J vaccine, the mRNA vaccine offers only minimal added value of about a day of life, explains Prof. Dr. Eckman.
According to the expert, it is important to emphasize that both types of vaccines are better than not being vaccinated at all. When the benefits of vaccination are multiplied by the vaccinated population, there is a significant net benefit.
Impact on the masses?
In the United States, if the so-called per capita benefit were to extend to the remaining unvaccinated population (people aged twelve and over), people vaccinated with an mRNA vaccine would experience a total gain of 3.92 million years of life adjusted for quality. Calculating the impact of the overall benefit of the J&J vaccine would result in a net benefit of 3.38 million quality-adjusted life years, the expert said.
Vaccination is better than no vaccination
“As we did not have time to conduct a clinical study to investigate these vaccination issues, we developed a computer model to simulate the results of the strategies described using the most recent and comprehensive data available. . Our analysis has shown that the two vaccines give almost equivalent results. The message to take with you is that it is better to have one or the other type of vaccine than not to be vaccinated at all, ”adds Professor Dr. Mark Eckman added in a press release from the. University of Cincinnati. (as)
