Tasmanians put on alert over COVID case - Sky News Australia

Tasmanians will find out on Saturday if they will have to get a COVID-19 test and isolate until they receive a negative result after a virus scare in the state.

Tasmanians will find out on Saturday morning if they are required to be tested for COVID-19 and isolate until a negative result is received.

The state's Public Health Director Dr Mark Veitch revealed on Friday a Launceston health worker had tested positive to the virus after arriving back in the UK.

The health worker completed their last shift at the Launceston General Hospital on June 20 before spending time travelling around Tasmania.

The individual returned a negative test result on June 30 just before flying to London via Singapore but was confirmed positive on July 4, a day after their arrival.

A list of places the worker visited will be made available by health authorities on Saturday morning, with an estimated 200 to 300 people expected to need testing.

Dr Veitch said anyone at the exposure sites at the specified times would need to isolate and get tested.

"What we're trying to do is, identify if there has been someone out there who could have infected these people," he said.

"It's being done through an abundance of caution. I think there are a lot more likely explanations for this person being infected but it's very important we cover off even less likely possibilities."

Dr Veitch described the worker's infection as "quite a complex story" and said "there are a number of possible explanations for it".

"The most likely is this person acquired the infection on a flight, most likely the one between Singapore and London," he said.

Dr Veitch said it was also "remotely possible" the individual caught the infection just after arriving back in London, or a less likely possibility is it was a false negative.

"The possibility I want to keep in mind though is, could this person have been infected during their movement around Tasmania before they left?" he said.

Adblock test (Why?)
