COVID live updates: Expert says we can't discontinue lockdowns until the vaccination rate goes up - ABC News

Assistance may be on the table for small businesses in Sydney's lockdown

The NSW Government says it's considering expanding its lockdown assistance package to businesses with an annual turnover of less than $75,000.

The government last week announced grants of up to $10,000 for businesses which had suffered a significant trade loss as a result of the Greater Sydney lockdown.

But those grants are only available to businesses with a turnover greater than $75,000 annually.

The estimated cost of the current support package is $1.4 billion.

The NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet says he's also seeking more support from the federal government for casual workers and businesses needing rent relief.

Yesterday federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said Mr Perrottet wrote to him asking the federal government to offer JobKeeper payments to people affected by the lockdown.

But Mr Frydenberg ruled out bringing JopKeeper back.

"That was an emergency support payment that had an initial timeframe and as you know, we expected they would be further lockdowns and we do have payments available," he said.
