An aged care worker is refusing to get the Covid-19 vaccine despite his industry being related to 75 per cent of the country’s fatalities.

Since the start of the pandemic, in 2020, there have been 685 Australian Covid-19 related deaths in aged care settings. This equates to 75 per cent of the nation’s deaths.

Of those, 655 were from nursing homes across Victoria, 28 in NSW and one in Queensland and Tasmania.

Only last week another outbreak occurred at Summit Care at Baulkham Hills with five residents testing positive.

Following a decision at National Cabinet, where the government introduced a mandatory vaccination plan for aged care staff. One industry veteran has aired his grievances about the jab.

The man, who asked to remain anonymous, has worked in the industry for 30 years and claimed he is not an anti-vaxxer.

“I’m aware of many of my colleagues who are now fearful of getting the vaccine and feel coerced and pressured that if they don’t, they will be unemployed,” he told A Current Affair.

“There are many, many people like that. I’m certainly hesitant in relation to the Covid vaccine. The flu vaccine has been well-tested, well-researched.

“I find it scary that we can develop a vaccine and say that it’s going to be effective in such a short period of time without having a good study trial and reviewing the side effects people have had, including death.”

All vaccines used in Australia have been found to be safe and effective.

Last week, National Cabinet endorsed the decision of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee to make COVID-19 vaccination mandatory for all residential aged care workers by mid-September 2021.

Staff must have at least one dose of the vaccine before that date.

Currently no law or regulation would compel aged care workers to be vaccinated, however, it is highly recommended.

“The COVID-19 vaccine is not mandatory, but you are strongly encouraged to accept the offer of vaccination as it is an important measure to protect you, your family and the community from the effects of COVID-19,” the NSW Health website said in a statement related to frontline workers.

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard last week made an amendment to the Public Health Order that requires all aviation staff to be vaccinated.

It came after Sydney’s most recent outbreak where the Delta strain was transmitted from an overseas flight crew to a limo driver.
