Flooding emergency hits parts of Western Australia, damage bill tipped to be in the millions - 9News

A low pressure system is sweeping across WA, generating heavy rain and gusty winds with warnings of high tides between Jurien Bay and Margaret River.

Overnight the south-west region received isolated falls of up to 100mm with Gascoyne copping the brunt of the weather system.

Parts of the region received more rain in a day than it did in all of last year. The township of Carnarvon will have to undergo an extensive and expensive recovery.

Around 40 people had to be rescued after becoming caught in the floods while authorities will begin assessing the damage once the water starts to recede – which likely won't happen for another couple of days.

Across the rest of the country today, another low and associated trough over the northern tropics is triggering areas of rain and storms. Troughs are also bringing areas of rain and storms over parts of WA and Queensland, some intense.
