Concerns deepen over coronavirus vaccine rollout in Australia's aged care homes - 9News

Further issues have arisen in aged care homes in the first week of the highly-anticipated coronavirus vaccine rollout.

In one case, the vaccine needles did not show up at an aged care home and in another, the vaccine doses arrived at the wrong aged care homes, 9News understands.

Other facilities have been hit by delays, forcing their jab dates to be pushed back.

"There have been logistical issues in the first week of the rollout," Aged Care Minister Richard Colbeck told Today.

"We said that would happen. But it's important that we continue this process around the country to make sure these very vulnerable people do get their vaccine first."

An investigation is underway following the overdose bungle, with the Federal Government warning Healthcare Australia it could be sacked after it emerged the doctor who gave the vaccination had not completed full training.

Health Minister Greg Hunt has been forced to make a correction in parliament.

Neither had yet experienced any adverse reactions to the incorrect dose.

The GP involved has been temporarily stood down from administering further vaccines.

Health Minister Greg Hunt told Federal Parliament there had been a lack of training after initially indicating the doctor had done the training course.

"The department is concerned at this serious breach of protocol and the misleading information it received from HCA," the Department of Health said in a statement.

"We have at all times made it abundantly clear that safety cannot be compromised.

"The department has sought urgent evidence, independently verified, that all other HCA immunisers have completed all of the required training.

"The department has issued notice that the company could face contract termination or other sanction if further breaches occur."

The doctor will be referred to regulators, and a medic will be "embedded" with HCA to "independently review the company's protocol and operations," Health Australia said.

"Our focus during the vaccine rollout remains on the safety of all Australians," the Department of Health added.

Healthcare Australia started as a nursing agency in 1972, and now describes itself as "Australia's leading healthcare workforce solutions provider. "

Senator Colbeck told Today that Healthcare Australia has been "put on notice" after the vaccine bungle.

"They are on notice, Minister Hunt has had a conversation with them and also overlaid his own independent verification process with respect to the training being completed."

Senator Colbeck admitted the accidental overdose had been a setback in Australia's vaccination rollout.

He said the doctor who administered the vaccine overdose had not completed the required training.

"From what I have been told so far the doctor had been provided with the training materials but didn't complete them until after the incident occurred.

"And I have to say from a medical professional I find that somewhat outrageous."

The Federal Government said it expected to complete 60,000 vaccinations in Australia by the end of this week after the rollout began on Sunday.

Senator Jacqui Lambie told Today that "bumps along the road" were to be expected in the national vaccine rollout but the incident was concerning.

"We need to calm down. Somebody has it wrong, I'm hoping those two elderly people are okay," she said.

"I think there will be some bumps in the road on the way no doubt. There will be other issues come up with it."

This is not the first accidental overdoses of the coronavirus vaccine.

He was immediately taken to hospital for supervision and soon discharged after reporting to be feeling well and suffering no side-effects.
