More virus may be linked to Vic household - Yahoo News Australia

Authorities are still trying to determine how the first person in the household became infected

Five members of a large household in Victoria have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, with more cases likely.

The five were among 10 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the state on Thursday.

Victorian Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton says authorities are still trying to determine how the first person in the home became infected.

Others linked to the "big household" may also be sick, he noted.

"Obviously it is always a risk with close contacts within a household, in terms of transmitting to others, and there are some others who are symptomatic who are being tested," Prof Sutton said.

"So there might be more confirmed in coming days because it is a large household."

A second security guard at a Melbourne CBD hotel housing quarantined travellers was also among Thursday's new cases.

Professor Sutton said it's possible the Rydges on Swanston worker had shared a shift with another staff member whose infection was confirmed a day earlier.

The hotel is shut to the public and all staff are being tested.

Victoria has 65 active cases out of a total 1628.

The local tourism industry is preparing for a return to overnight stays from June 1, amid an easing of COVID-1 restrictions in the state

"They can't wait to welcome guests back," Tourism Accommodation Australia Victoria general manager Dougal Hollis told AAP.
