A crew member on board the coronavirus hit Ruby Princess cruise ship has been diagnosed with tuberculosis.
In a letter to passengers who travelled on the ship in March, NSW Health said the crew member is being treated in hospital and the risk the illness was passed to passengers was low.
“There is no reason to believe you are at increased risk of contracting tuberculosis from being on the cruise ship,” NSW Health said.
“You do not need to take any action as a result of this information, and you do not need to be screened at this time.”
The crew member was diagnosed weeks after the cruise in March.
“The people who may be at risk of infection include some hospital staff, roommate, close friends and workmates,” NSW Health said.
“Passengers on the ship are at very low risk of infection.”
Tuberculosis is a contagious respiratory illness and is spread through the air, but not on surfaces.
It can be cured with antibiotics.
In Australia, hundreds of coronavirus cases were linked back to the Ruby Princess ship.
The NSW government launched a special probe into the circumstances of the ship’s arrival, after 22 deaths from coronavirus across the country were linked back to it.
Just last week, a 68-year-old Queensland woman, who was a passenger on board the Ruby Princess, was confirmed to have contracted COVID-19.
Authorities are working to determine whether the Cairns woman contracted the disease on board the infamous cruise liner or in the community.
