Coronavirus SA: No new cases for 11th day as Premier looks to “reboot” economy in a safe and careful way - The Advertiser

SA has recorded another day of zero new cases, an 11-day clean sheet streak, and only seven people in the state currently have COVID-19.

SA Health conducted 943 tests yesterday. No one is in ICU.

SA Health chief public health officer Nicola Spurrier said SA was in striking distance of soon having no one actively suffering the disease.

Premier Steven Marshall said SA had done a particularly good job in combating the health crisis and the next step was to safely “reboot” the economy, to be led by a transition committee on easing restrictions.

It includes top public sector bureaucrats and health officials.

“When we look to ease these restrictions, obviously we have to be firmly focused on the health risks. “These restrictions put in place have had a heavy penalty. “Every one of these restrictions put in place has been agonized over. “Now we have to go in the opposite direction.

“We are going to do this, we are going to do it in a careful way.”

SOUTH AUSSIES URGED TO STAY VIGILANT

South Australians were today urged to not become complacent despite the state’s streak of zero coronavirus cases hitting 10 days.

While the state’s total number of coronavirus patients remains 438 – 98 per cent of whom have recovered – authorities are launching a new push to make sure complacency does not ruin the good work to date.

There are seven active cases remaining and three patients being cared for in the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

This week a father, 68, was discharged from the intensive care unit.

More than 58,000 tests have been completed.

But the state’s deputy chief public health officer, Dr Mike Cusack, said it’s not the time for complacency.

He said a new ad campaign would launch today asking South Australians not to undo their good work so far because new spikes remained possible.

“It only takes one or two cases in the community for things to run away a bit,” he said.

Dr Cusack’s update came as new figures show the number of patients seeking medical appointments via technology has more than doubled.

SA Health data published today show more than 17,500 “Telehealth” sessions longer than 10 minutes occurred from February to April, compared to at least 7,000 for the same period last year.

Authorities said the rise, the equivalent to nearly 150 per cent, comes as more patients seek treatment at home to help stop COVID-19 from spreading.

Officials say digital appointments can drastically reduce wait time and turnaround for testing, as well as removing the burden and costs associated with travelling to clinics.

Since SA Health last month expanded the service, more than 2500 of medicos have registered to provide care including medical, nursing and midwifery as well as allied health professionals.

The Federal Government has announced a $600 million expansion of Telehealth services to allow every doctor’s or specialist appointment that does not require a face-to-face treatment to occur over the phone or videolink.

Women’s and Children’s Hospital Network maternal-fetal medicine service clinical lead, Dr Peter Muller, said increased demand has led to a fast-tracking of remote screening appointments for women with complicated pregnancies including twins.

He said sonographer kits contained a laptop and an epiphan system, which can relay the ultrasound video in high quality. It was particularly beneficial for country patients.

“We can connect women at regional sites directly with a specialist in Adelaide so they can access their vital care and expertise without the burden of travel,” he said.

Health Minister Stephen Wade said when the virus first emerged, officials identified technology as a way of protecting public health and reducing its spread.
