NRL fans urged to stick to virus rules | Magnet | Eden, NSW - Eden Magnet

NSW residents are being warned to remain vigilant and not fall into the trap of disregarding COVID-19 restrictions while enjoying the NRL grand final.

Although the rugby league decider is being held out of state in Queensland for the first time, Sydney fans will be buoyed by the fact two of their own teams are contesting the event - South Sydney and Penrith.

However, with daily cases remaining stubbornly high, NSW Health's Dr Jeremy McAnulty has urged supporters not to drop their guard against the virus.

"I hope everyone enjoys the game but in order to remind people to continue to follow the safety rules ... social gatherings are not permitted," he told reporters on Saturday.

"Because you run the risk of spreading the virus ... the number of fully vaccinated adults who can gather outdoors remains limited to five."

The state reported 813 new locally acquired virus COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths on Saturday.

Dr McAnulty said 87.7 per cent of people aged 16 years and over had now received their first dose of a vaccine, while 65.2 per cent of the state was fully inoculated.

"Thank you so much for coming forward to get vaccinated to protect yourself, your family and your communities," he said.

There are currently 1005 COVID-19 patients in hospital in NSW, with 212 in intensive care units and 99 on ventilators.

Of the 10 deaths in the 24 hours to 8pm on Friday, four people were not vaccinated and five people had received one dose.

One man, who acquired his infection at Mount Druitt Hospital, had received two doses but was suffering underlying health conditions.

The deaths take the toll for the current NSW outbreak to 362.

NSW Health on Saturday said it had detected virus fragments in sewage at Dareton in the far west, Dungog in the Hunter, Karuah on the mid coast, South Grafton in northern NSW and Bermagui on the south coast.

Casino is currently in lockdown, with stay-at-home orders applicable to anyone who has visited the northern NSW town since September 24.

Meanwhile, non-urgent day surgery will recommence in NSW private health facilities on Tuesday as transmission rates continue to fall. However non-urgent procedures at NSW public hospitals will remain postponed.
