A message from Dr Young: Jabs must keep rising for Queensland to shine this summer - Brisbane Times

It takes at least five weeks to be covered from your first vaccine dose. If you don’t get vaccinated this weekend and continue to delay it, you won’t be protected until at least December.

Delaying only puts you at risk when COVID-19 spreads into Queensland and it may impact your future plans.

And it will spread, there is no doubt about that.

We’re getting closer to the festive season and I know Queenslanders want to spend time with their family and friends over the holidays – whether they be in Queensland or interstate.

Getting vaccinated is critical to this and key to keeping the community safe.

It will allow us to start planning the future with confidence – to be able to plan holidays away, weddings and family get-togethers.

It’s in the hands of all Queenslanders as to how quickly the state opens up. There is plenty of vaccine and plenty of access to the vaccine.

Every single vaccination brings us closer to that goal and helps protect us and prevent significant outbreaks.

For those who think COVID-19 won’t come to Queensland – you’re wrong.

If you think COVID-19 won’t affect your region – you’re wrong. If you think COVID-19 won’t affect you at some point – you’re wrong. It is extremely likely that everyone will get COVID-19 at some point, just like the flu.

Most people now being hospitalised because of COVID-19 are not vaccinated.

Thank you for all those who have already taken the opportunity to get vaccinated. You are playing an important role in protecting yourself and the community.

When COVID-19 comes to Queensland, you need to be protected. Those who choose not to get vaccinated need to realise there may be short and long-term health consequences.

You want to be protected from serious illness, from being on a ventilator in ICU, from death.

For those people who are saying “I’ll just wait a bit”. There’s no reason to delay. Getting vaccinated is safe, it will protect you from serious illness, and will help get us back to normal faster.

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s really important you get vaccinated as soon as possible. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are safe for anyone planning to have a baby, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Joining the millions of Queenslanders already vaccinated is easier than ever. We’re bringing the vaccine directly to you.

I implore you, do not waste this opportunity.

Protect yourself, protect your community and join the group effort to open up Queensland – please get vaccinated this Super Saturday.

Dr Jeannette Young has served as Queensland’s Chief Health Officer since 2005. She will become Queensland’s 27th governor on November 1.
