Palaszczuk takes swipe at NSW’s quarantine-free travel, says QLD is not ready - Sky News Australia

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Queensland "does not have the protection it needs" to allow the state to follow Victoria and NSW in scrapping quarantine for fully vaccinated international travellers.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has warned her state has not yet achieved the necessary vaccination targets to allow international travellers in without quarantine.

Ms Palaszczuk was on Friday grilled as to whether Queensland would ease restrictions for double-dosed arrivals after both NSW and Victoria confirmed they would scrap hotel quarantine for fully vaccinated international arrivals from November 1.

Ms Palaszczuk pointed out that NSW “has had the virus through their community and their vaccination rates are really high”.

She also took a swipe at the Perrottet government and Prime Minister Scott Morrison for reportedly breaking away from the National Cabinet agreement.

“National Cabinet has not made any of those decisions, there was supposed to be a trial, obviously the Prime Minister and NSW Premier have made those announcements today,” she told the COVID-19 press conference.

“We will look at that very closely but as we are today, very clear example, five cases in hotel quarantine.

“So Queensland does not have the protection yet that it needs  to be able to have quarantine-free vaccinated people staying in Queensland.”

Ms Palaszczuk was asked whether she was concerned by the state’s potential economic loss if international travellers can visit Victoria and NSW but not the Sunshine State.

“Lydia it’s unsafe for people to do that in Queensland at the moment, our vaccination rates are not high enough,” the Premier replied.

“We’re not even at 70 per cent double dose. We have set out very clear roadmap you know, we need people to come forward and get vaccinated.

“We have not had the situations that NSW and Victoria have had where tragically we are seeing numbers of people who have lost their lives every day.

“But now is the time we’ve got that window of opportunity for Queenslanders to get vaccinated.”

The Premier said she would like to see Queensland reach the 90 per cent double dose vaccination rate “as quickly as possible”, referring to NSW where “they’ve actually reached their targets earlier”.

“That’s why I'm encouraging everyone to come out and get vaccinated.”

Queensland Health reported on Thursday 73.2 per cent of the state's over 16 population had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine while 58.1 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Under the state's roadmap, interstate quarantine-free travel into Queensland remains off the cards until the state reaches the 80 per cent double dose vaccine threshold - which is expected to occur on December 17.
