NSW records 177 COVID-19 cases, one death, on eve of international border reopening - Sydney Morning Herald

NSW has recorded 177 local cases of COVID-19 and one death, the state’s lowest daily number of cases since late July.

The drop in cases in the state follows 236 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 and three deaths that were reported on Saturday.

It comes as Australia prepares to reopen its borders for international travel for the first time in nearly two years on Monday.

NSW Health said on Sunday that 87.5 per cent of people in NSW aged 16 and older are fully vaccinated, while 93.5 per cent have had one dose.

Sunday’s cases were the lowest daily number since July 30, when 172 infections were recorded.

Victoria recorded 1036 cases and 12 deaths on Sunday. Eighty per cent of Victorians aged 16 and older are fully vaccinated.

From Monday, the ban preventing Australians from leaving the country without an exit visa will be lifted to enable citizens and permanent residents who have had two doses of the vaccine to travel overseas.

The changes mean fully vaccinated returning Australians who arrive in NSW, Victoria and the ACT will not be required to quarantine in hotels or at home. Those who arrive in other states will still have to quarantine.

NSW and Victoria will also remove the cap on the number of citizens, permanent residents, visa-holders and their immediate family members who can enter for the fully vaccinated, clearing the path for the thousands of Australians who have been locked out of the country during the pandemic access for the first time in 20 months.

The federal government on Friday changed its rules to confirm it would recognise the vaccination status of Australians who had received a mix of two vaccines.
