One person was arrested after hundreds of protesters marched in Coolangatta on the NSW border to protest against COVID-19 lockdowns and vaccinations on Sunday.
Police monitored the protesters as they gathered about noon and moved down Coolangatta Esplanade on Sunday afternoon.
Several police crews moved through the crowd of several hundred people, which appeared to be relatively peaceful.
One person was arrested, while there were reports that a man rode a horse through the crowd while shouting.
One protester carried a sign saying Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young was a “health hazard”. When another was asked how she felt about NSW having 830 cases of COVID overnight, she said it was “fate”.
Sunday’s protest came after a “disgusted” Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles described as “reckless” and “shameful” a similar rally on Saturday in which thousands of people marched through Brisbane’s CBD.
On Sunday, NSW recorded its highest daily total of COVID-19 cases at 830, while Queensland reported no new cases.
Restrictions eased across Queensland in recent days, but border rules were tightened to allow only essential workers who have had at least one dose of the vaccine to cross into the state.
