Sick covid patients’ emotional plea - NEWS.com.au

Patients with Covid-19 in a Sydney hospital have revealed the pain and anguish of being seriously ill and separated from family.

Three Covid-19 patients in Sydney’s Concord Hospital have described the physical and mental toll of being sick with the virus and separated from their families.

The trio have made an emotional plea to their communities to take the disease seriously and get vaccinated in a video shared by the Sydney Local Health District on Wednesday.

Single mother Ramona, a pharmacy worker from Greenacre in Sydney’s hard-hit southwest, was in tears as she spoke of missing her two children.

“All I can think of are my children that I haven’t seen in a very long time. I haven’t been working. I’m a single mum. It’s not easy,” she said.

“I’m an essential worker. I could have contracted the virus from someone who didn’t want to get the vaccination.”

The 30-year-old was days away from receiving her second vaccine dose when she contracted the virus and fell ill.

“I’ve had two kids, I’ve had a major operation. I’ve never had to recover or push myself to try to recover mentally this much. It’s been crazy,” she said.

Osama, a 35-year-old tradie from Lakemba, has been in hospital for more than a week and said at its worst he felt “close to death”.

“Something had taken the lungs and it was harsh. There was fever, there were headaches. A combination of things you don’t want to experience,” he said.

His wife has been in ICU with Covid-19 and his children are in Westmead Hospital.

“It’s separated us. It hasn’t been easy,” he said.

Putney Construction Worker Fawaz, 50, said his wife and children also had the virus, with one of his daughters also in hospital.

“I don’t know how I caught this virus and I’m not doing too well at the moment,” Fawaz said, lying facedown on his hospital bed

He said he didn’t know how he had caught Covid-19 and had booked his first vaccine appointment for October

“Please get vaccinated. I wish I did beforehand. But I did book it in. It just wasn’t meant to be. It’s not a game,” he said.

Concord Hospital senior respiratory physician Associate Professor Lucy Morgan said she was struck by how many of her Covid-19 patients were really young.

“Some of the stories I heard in my most recent weekend in the wards were really heartbreaking,” she said.
