Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has revealed the state’s lockdown rules will be eased modestly once thresholds of low cases numbers are met.
Mr Andrews said the detailed plan on what low cases numbers health authorities could tolerate living with would be finalised by chief health officer Brett Sutton on Tuesday evening.
The Premier said he would reveal the plan to Victorians on Wednesday and once the thresholds were reached the state could begin a “modest easing of restrictions”.
“The detailed plan will include thresholds if we can’t achieve zero despite our best efforts of how many cases can we tolerate,” he said.
“If we can keep cases to a number, here is what we can ease over a period of time as we all race to get vaccinated to get the number to 70 and 80 per cent (vaccinated).
“It will need to be a low number, it cannot be in the hundreds, because it won’t be in the hundreds for long, it will race and get away from us.
“I do want to be very clear with the people of Victoria, this will not be freedom day, it will not be an opening up type day.
“It will be modest changes that hopefully can be meaningful in people’s lives.”
Mr Andrews said he would provide Victorians with as much clarity as possible.
“None of us should kid ourselves pretending that we can live with Covid when we’ve only got 35 per cent of people vaccinated,” he said.
“They will be very modest changes because there is no middle ground here, it’s either very low numbers or very high numbers until we get people vaccinated.
“We will explain to you what those thresholds are, the low numbers that we can cope with, the low numbers that we can live with and the easing that we’ll be able to do over coming weeks.”
It’s understood some of the rules that could be part of the “modest” easing are the playground ban, the night time curfew and the 5km travel limit.
The Premier said he could not announce the plan of Tuesday as no decision had been made yet and authorities were meeting later in the day to sign off on the plan.
“It is not finished yet, far from it. When it is, I’ll be back here tomorrow morning taking you through it,” Mr Andrews said.
“It will not be everything, and not every question I will be able to answer, because there are some things about this Delta strain that we don’t know.”
But he did confirm reopening school would not be part of the modest easing of restrictions.
