Accelerated research for vaccines for COVID-19 has produced very promising results. But it is crucial, Bill Rawlinson says, that all the appropriate testing is done, as several world leaders promise their people vaccines before the end of this year. Professor Rawlinson says some of the vaccines being discussed are yet to be tested appropriately for humans. As the World Health Organisation director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warns there will likely be no "silver bullet" vaccine and public health measures will continue to be important, Professor Rawlinson says he agrees it is not an "either/or" situation. As with the seasonal flu, he says COVID-19 responses are likely to always be a combination of vaccines, and health and hygiene measures, plus treatments for those who get infected.
