Marriott Hotel: COVID-infected Sydney guard shopped at Woolies - NEWS.com.au

A COVID-infected Sydney security guard working at the Marriott Hotel on quarantine duty went shopping at Woolworths and Kmart while waiting for his virus test result.

Asad Niaz was told to have a mandatory test on Thursday afternoon after another security guard from the same company tested positive.

He has now been fined by police for not isolating.

Police allege the 22-year-old failed to isolate after being swabbed for coronavirus on Thursday afternoon, despite NSW Health authorities advising him to do so.

The guard instead went shopping at Westfield Burwood, in Sydney’s west, on Thursday afternoon where it’s understood he bought groceries and a blanket.

It’s understood he then attended Service NSW, also in Burwood, on Friday afternoon to renew his licence.

He returned a positive result on Saturday, triggering virus warnings for the Burwood venues however NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant said yesterday the risk of transmission was “very low”.

NSW Health is now awaiting results of genomic testing to see if the man’s case is linked to that of the original security guard who tested positive last week.

Police spent hours going through CCTV footage from the Marriott Hotel to make sure the first guard had not breached any safety protocols while he was working.

“Further testing has indicated his level of infectiousness at that time was very low and it is unlikely we are going to be able to isolate any virus from his samples given that low level of infectiousness,” Dr Chant said on Monday.

Despite avoiding a shutdown of the Burwood venues, NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Gary Worboys said the 22-year-old should have known better and described his alleged behaviour as “absolutely disappointing”.

Mr Niaz has been handed two $1000 fines for breaching coronavirus directions and will spend the next 14 days in a NSW Health quarantine facility.

NSW recorded three new cases on Monday. Two were returned travellers in hotel quarantine and the final case was a close contact of a healthcare worker at Liverpool Hospital. Both of those cases were already in isolation.
