Coronavirus cases in Victoria rise by 21, including 15 returned travellers - ABC News

Victoria has recorded 21 new cases of coronavirus overnight, bringing the total number of active cases in the state to 70.

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said 15 of the new infections were returned travellers who were already in hotel quarantine.

Of the other six cases, one is a resident at the Rosstown nursing home in Carnegie, in Melbourne's south-east.

Another is a contractor working at the Stamford Plaza Hotel, which housed returned travellers who were in mandatory quarantine.

A household contact of an infected hospital patient at Monash Health was also included in the overnight figures.

Previously there were six confirmed cases linked to the Monash Health outbreak, including a healthcare worker.

"Essentially we've got a family grouping and a healthcare worker, and it appears from the investigation that the healthcare worker is not the source of the [Monash Health] infections," Ms Mikakos said.

The Health Minister said the Monash Health cluster would now be referred to as the "south-eastern suburbs outbreak".

The other three cases that were not in returned travellers are under investigation.

Ms Mikakos said a large number of returned travellers were from the Indian subcontinent.

"Countries like India, Bangladesh and Pakistan are experiencing exponential growth in confirmed cases at the moment, and obviously that's impacting on the increase on our numbers who are in hotel quarantine," she said.

Victoria has recorded 1,762 coronavirus cases since the start of the outbreak.
