Victoria refuses to rule out locking down hotspot suburbs as cases hit three-month high - 9News

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed health authorities are considering putting coronavirus hotspots in lockdown as the state recorded another jump in daily COVID-19 figures.

Likening the ongoing pandemic to battling bushfires, Mr Andrews said "putting this out" would prove a big challenge.

The comments come as the state records 49 new COVID-19 cases today, an increase of eight on yesterday's figures and the highest daily total since April 2.

Just four of the new cases have been linked to known outbreaks, with the source of infection still under investigation in the remaining 45.

The number of people being treated in hospital has also increased from five to seven, with one person seriously unwell in intensive care.

The government was waiting on the full results of the three-day coronavirus blitz in suburban hotspots to come through before deciding on any further measures, Mr Andrews told a press conference today.

But localised stay-at-home orders were on the table.

"If that is deemed the appropriate public health response, then that is what we'll do," Mr Andrews said.

The huge number of tests conducted meant those results would most likely take until Tuesday to process.

The premier urged everyone, with or without symptoms, in the hotspot communities to present for testing, saying higher testing rates would make further measures less likely.

"It is a simple thing, but a massive thing, when it comes to trying to contain this virus given how wildly infectious it is and given how much and how quickly it moves," he said.

Among today's new COVID-19 cases are another staff member at a Coles distribution centre in Laverton, south-west of Melbourne.

An outbreak at the facility was announced last week after a worker connected to the Keilor Downs family outbreak attended work whilst unwell.

Another case has also been detected as part of an outbreak amongst security staff at the Stamford Plaza Hotel where overseas travellers are in quarantine, as new details emerge on how the outbreak may have started.

Two other cases linked to outbreaks amongst large extended families have also been detected.

Elsewhere in the country, NSW has recorded three new cases, two of whom are returned travellers.

The third case was detected in a crewmember of a cargo plane, after the 34-year-old became unwell during the flight to Australia.

All close contacts of the crew member have been identified and further investigations are underway, NSW Health said in a statement.

Western Australia has also recorded one new case today in a returned overseas traveller in hotel quarantine.

The state now has five active cases, all of whom are in hotel quarantine.

On Saturday, 331 people were assessed and 329 were swabbed for the virus in the state.
