A recap on hotel quarantine testing not being compulsory
Hello, I was amazed to learn yesterday that returned travellers in mandatory hotel quarantine were allowed to refuse testing for Covid19. Is this policy the norm in NSW as well as Victoria and if so what percentage of hotel quarantine guests have refused to be tested in Sydney? Given that there have been instances of lengthy incubation periods in some people it would seem to be a no brainer to make testing mandatory before leaving quarantine.-Unsure
I'll keep an eye out for any news on this front, but at the moment returned travellers who are asymptomatic are offered multiple opportunities, but are not forced, to be tested while in hotel quarantine in Victoria. I'm chasing up for New South Wales but I believe it's the same.
Yesterday we learnt that around 30 per cent of people who had come through Victoria's hotel quarantine fortnight had declined testing.
When asked if it should be made compulsory, Deputy Chief Health Officer Annaliese van Diemen said:
"That's I think something for consideration and further discussion but at this point in time we're pretty happy with the current regimen, it's more stringent than most other places."
When asked if it was possible someone in hotel quarantine could conceal symptoms towards the end of their isolation and then leave isolation while infected, Dr van Diemen conceded it was possible.
But it's also worth bearing in mind what we know about the bulk of the state's new outbreaks: they're being fuelled by family gatherings and people failing to self-isolate in the community after tests or even diagnosis.
"We ask residents of Victoria to really think about whether they need to undertake frequent social events, either between extended family groups or social groups," Dr van Diemen said.
"This is the thing that is driving transmission at the moment."
