Victoria coronavirus update shows high cases again with 64 positive tests - 7NEWS.com.au

Victoria has had another big day of coronavirus cases, with more than 60 confirmed in the past 24 hours.

Health authorities have confirmed there have been 64 new cases in the state in the past 24 hours to Tuesday.

13 of those are linked to previous outbreaks, 20 have been identified through routine testing and 31 cases are under investigation.

None of the cases are from returned travellers in hotel quarantine.

The numbers are lower than the 75 cases reported on Monday, which was the highest day for Victoria in three months.

A total of 90 cases were recorded over the weekend.

On Monday, Victoria’s Health Minister Jenny Mikakos warned a growing number of the new cases were in young people.

“I don’t want to point the finger, but the data does show us that 37 per cent of new cases from Sunday are people in their 20s or in their 30s,” Mikakos said.

“We’re seeing more young people getting together with their mates, contracting this virus and then taking it home to their families”.

Overnight, the Victorian Government went into crisis talks after Monday recorded the fourth highest case day since the start of the pandemic.

The health department have been trying to track down more than 2500 close contacts to tell them to stay home.

“We are at the limits of managing that number, it is very large,” Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said on Monday.
