Australia breaking coronavirus news, headlines, weather and updates for June 29: 75 new COVID-19 cases in Victoria; Melbourne COVID-19 hotspots hit with testing blitz; Madeleine McCann new details; Worldwide coronavirus death toll exceeds 500,000 - 9News

Victoria's Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said it's too soon to say if suburbs will be put into lockdown.

But he said the "clearly big numbers today" were "absolutely concerning".

He said any possible lockdowns on certain suburbs - something the premier has indicated could happen - are a "balancing act".

"It would be a harder step but has to be proportionate," he said.

"We know what the consequences are ... in terms of fatigue in people's positive behaviours.

"We don't want to drive people out of suburban areas into new unaffected areas.

"So there is a balancing act in terms of making the call on a lockdown.

"We know that it is a real challenge for businesses, it is a real challenge for people in their homes if that is what is required.

"But it is absolutely an option and we flagged the possibility of using it and we will use it if it is required."

He said transmission is happening because people are still going out with symptoms and seeing other people.

"I think it will get worse before it gets better," Prof. Sutton said.

"We know what works already. We just need people to do it."
