Australia breaking coronavirus news, headlines, weather and updates for June 29: Melbourne COVID-19 hotspots hit with testing blitz; Madeleine McCann new details; Worldwide coronavirus death toll exceeds 500,000 - 9News

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he is confident Victoria will be able to get on top of a surge in coronavirus cases.

Mr Morrison said the Federal Government and other state governments were throwing their support behind Victoria, which yesterday saw 49 new cases of coronavirus confirmed.

It followed a further 41 cases of COVID-19 identified in Victoria on Saturday.

This morning it was revealed a worker at the Australian Border Force base at Melbourne Airport had also tested positive to coronavirus.

"Down in Victoria they are doing comprehensive testing, the ADF is supporting them in that as are the other states," Mr Morrison told 2GB radio.

"We just have to work hard to get on top of it.

"Yes, it is a genuine concern but my advice is that it's something that we will be able to get on top of if we just keep applying the focus and doing what is necessary."

The Victorian outbreaks, which stemmed cases in hotel quarantine, a meatworks factory and cases of people not social distancing, showed why we needed to remain vigilant against the virus, Mr Morrison said.

"We always said there is the risk of outbreaks … that's the great risk of COVID-19 and we can't be complacent about it."
