Coronavirus: WA Health Minister says restrictions will be eased if cases stay low - 7NEWS.com.au

WA’s health minister says the state will likely relax some coronavirus restrictions if the number of new cases remains low - without giving a specific date.

With a number of West Australians due to arrive home from overseas in coming days, health authorities will be closely monitoring any new infections.

WA was expecting a flight from India in the next 24 hours, following other aircraft this week bringing hundreds of Australians home from overseas.

“WA is a bit like Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria because we’re on either end of the great island of Australia (and) we receive a lot of Australians coming back home,” he told reporters on Friday.

“I doubt you’ll ever see a situation where we have no new cases for three weeks.

“It’s about managing those people and managing any outbreaks of the disease.”

Hotel quarantine

Those arriving in WA from India will be taken directly to quarantine hotels.

“I think we’ll continue to use the hotels for the coming days in relation to the cohorts we see coming through,” he said.

Mr Cook is also urging people to maintain contact with their doctor, saying some general practices are seeing significant falls in appointments, which may lead to critical health conditions being untreated.

People are also urged to book a flu vaccination.

Up to 30 per cent of West Australians have stopped going to their GP because they are worried about coronavirus infection.

‘See Your GP’

WA’s Primary Health Alliance has launched a “See Your GP” campaign to encourage people with non-coronavirus related health concerns to see their doctor.

“Patients and the community and their carers are really frightened,” WAPHA chairman Richard Choong said.

“Come back to the GP, make sure you actually have a relationship and if you have a chronic disease we’re still managing it.”

WA’s coronavirus tally was 551 on Thursday, while the number of active cases fell to 36.
