Coronavirus in NSW: Family of Newmarch House resident who tested negative to COVID-19 before death speaks out - 7NEWS.com.au

The family of a Sydney woman who tested negative for coronavirus twice before her death have spoken out for the first time.

Mother and grandmother Ann Fahey, 76, died on Saturday afternoon just 48 hours after she’d tested positive to COVID-19.

Newmarch House resident became the 14th person to die from COVID-19 but two earlier tests suggested the 76-year-old didn’t have the virus.

Her family has now been told it’s likely those results were wrong.

“I’m appalled. I’m angry. I’m upset,” Mark Fahey, Ann’s son told 7NEWS.

“This is a Ruby Princess on land. People are dying. It’s not good enough,” Nicole Fahey, Ann’s granddaughter added.

The Faheys said they received a call on Sunday night from Anglicare CEO Grant Millard, who revealed Ann may have received an incorrect test result over a week ago.

“If the test was correct - in the first place - she would’ve had a week’s head start,” Mark said.

The issue raises potential implications for the nurses at the facility.

“Those same nurses have been going and treating all the other negative friends in there that she had - are they next?” Nicole added.

The new claims come as the Newmarch House recorded its fifteenth death on Monday.

The aged care facility also announced tougher health protocols, including testing all staff on entry and separating residents who have tested positive to the virus.

The NSW opposition will this week put Health Minister Brad Hazzard before an Upper House inquiry.

“We have people who are passing away every single day and a Minister who is doing nothing,” Opposition leader Jodi McKay said.

In a statement, Anglicare Sydney has described the virus as “devastating” for the elderly in the community.

“The impact of COVID-19 on older people is increasingly evident in Australia and internationally and this is extremely distressing for other residents, their families and members of the wider community,” the organisation said.

“Anglicare appreciates the support of the Commonwealth Government in assisting us to source an infection control specialist who is currently on site this week, monitoring and reviewing all current contamination and infection control procedures.

“We also appreciate government support in implementing the Family Support Program, which will enable registered nurses to communicate regularly to families about their loved ones.”
