Could COVID-19 be a sexually transmitted disease?
Quite possibly, according to new research that found traces of the virus in semen.
Chinese doctors tested 38 male patients hospitalised with coronavirus in January and February.
They found the disturbing result in 16 per cent of their subjects.
The semen tested positive for COVID-19 in some men even after they had passed the symptomatic stage and were on the road to recovery.
The research was conducted at the Shangqiu Municipal Hospital in the central China province of Henan (directly to the north of Hubei province where the virus first emerged last December).
The findings were published in the US medical journal JAMA Network Open on Thursday.
“We found that SARS-CoV-2 can be present in the semen of patients with COVID-19, and SARS-CoV-2 may still be detected in the semen of recovering patients,” Diangeng Li of Chinese People’s Liberation Army General Hospital in Beijing and colleagues wrote.

“Even if the virus cannot replicate in the male reproductive system, it may persist, possibly resulting from the privileged immunity of testes.”
So what does “privileged immunity” actually mean?
Essentially, that the virus can find a safe haven from the body’s attacking immune system in difficult to reach places.

While disturbing, medical experts say the findings are not surprising.
Other horror viruses such as Ebola and Zika have shown up in semen sometimes months after the patient has recovered.
The study concluded that sexual transmission could play a critical part in COVID-19’s ongoing existence.
And it said avoiding the blood and saliva from a recovered coronavirus patient may not go far enough.
The solution?
Abstinence or condom use for men recovering from the virus, the researchers advise.
