Coronavirus Australia: NSW COVID-19 cases rise among healthcare workers including Newmarch staff - 7NEWS.com.au

The three new coronavirus cases recorded in New South Wales overnight were all among the state’s healthcare workers.

Two of the three are staff members at Anglicare’s Newmarch House aged care facility, NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said.

The infections were identified as part of a staff screening process that was rolled out at the facility on Monday.

As the official recording period closes at 8pm, there was another additional case recorded among staff at the coronavirus plagued facility late on Monday - making it three cases at Newmarch alone.

It is understood that the third staff member was asymptomatic and had been working solely in the COVID-19 positive area of Newmarch House.

The facility has now been linked to at least 65 coronavirus cases among staff and residents.

The one other case was a healthcare worker in the Nepean Blue Mountains healthcare district.

Chant said the employee had not worked while infectious, and there was no ongoing risk to the public.

Newmarch nightmare

Another coronavirus-related death was also recorded during the reporting period.

An elderly man at Newmarch House became the fifteenth person to succumb to the disease at the facility since an outbreak began in early April.

102 patients are currently being treated in hospital, with 13 in intensive care units, and 11 of which require ventilators.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian reiterated “even the mildest symptoms” warranted a test.

“As we’re lifting restrictions in May and as we look forward to lifting further restrictions beyond the ones that we’ve announced, we need to make sure there are more people getting tested so we can control the virus, control the spread and ensure that the vast majority of the community stay well away from this virus,” she said.
