Popular “Something Borrowed” author Emily Giffin apologized Wednesday after criticizing Meghan Markle’s recent appearance in a video with her son Archie on his first birthday.
Earlier in the day, Giffin slammed the Duchess of Sussex, 38, as “unmaternal” and “phony,” according to an Instagram story capture. The 48-year-old author later posted a lengthy message to her Instagram account, addressing the comments and criticism she received.
“To be clear, I absolutely loved that a biracial, American woman was marrying into the Royal Family,” Giffin wrote. “It seemed a wonderful, happy thing for everyone. I celebrated their wedding by hosting a gathering here at my home and posting many, many photos. Further, I was appalled by any signs of racism against her.”
Giffin said that while her “feelings about BOTH Harry and Meghan changed” in recent months as they decided to leave their senior royal duties behind, her criticism of the former actress “has never had anything to do with her race.”
“Further, I understood why she wanted to leave the monarchy and carve out her own path. I do, however, find fault with the way BOTH she and Harry handled things, and those feelings bled over in later posts, including the ones today,” Giffin wrote.
Among her initial comments about Meghan, Giffin posted a still from Meghan and Archie’s video to her Instagram story with the caption: “Happy Birthday, Archie. Go Away, Megan [sic],” per a screenshot. She also commented on an Instagram account dedicated to the Sussexes, writing: “Holy ‘me first.'”
“I can see how some of my posts may have felt mean-spirited, and could be construed as having racial undertones. It was not my intent, but I understand that intent and impact are two very different things,” Giffin said. “And I am truly sorry for that negative impact.”
Meghan and Harry, 35, celebrated Archie’s birthday Wednesday with a sweet video shared on Save the Children UK’s Instagram page, which featured the Duchess reading Archie’s favorite book, Duck! Rabbit!” aloud.
The couple is currently house-hunting in Los Angeles after quitting the royal family in January.
