Crisis cabinet will have a stronger focus on the state's economic recovery under planned changes, Premier Dominic Perrottet has announced.

The new Premier while committing to Monday, October 11 as the day when restrictions start to lift, had also flagged there was room for some tweaks to the COVID-19 roadmap.

And last night, he announced a name change for crisis cabinet to the COVID and Economic Recovery Committee. He also said economic experts such as NSW Chief Economist Stephen Walter would have more of a say.

More details are expected to be revealed today.

The announcement comes as NSW hit its 70 per cent double vaccination target yesterday.

Mr Perrottet also said the daily COVID-19 briefings would be scrapped and from next week case numbers would be released at 9.00am.

Recent transmission of COVID-19 has prompted stay-at-home orders to be extended until Monday in a number of regional areas in NSW.

NSW Health said the local government areas of Oberon and Snowy Monaro as well as Menindee and Sunset Strip in the Central Darling Shire would remain in lockdown until October 11.

Everyone in these areas must stay at home unless it is for an essential reason, which includes shopping for food, medical care, getting vaccinated, compassionate needs, exercise and work or tertiary education if you can’t work or study at home.

Yesterday, NSW recorded 594 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 and 10 deaths — seven men and three women.

Priest charged with sexual touching

A priest will appear in court today on charges of alleged sexual touching of two women at a Western Sydney home and a Central Coast church.

In July this year, detectives commenced an investigation after receiving reports two women – aged 45 and 22 – had been sexually touched on multiple occasions by a man known to them.

Following inquiries, detectives arrested a 33-year-old man at home in Mays Hill on on September 1 and charged him with seven counts of aggravated sexually touch another person.

Police allege the touching occurred at a home in Bankstown and a church at Mangrove on the state’s Central Coast while the man was undertaking duties as a priest between August 2019 and February 2020.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Bankstown Local Court today.k

There are hopes a COVID-19 outbreak at a Newcastle maternity ward and neonatal unit has been contained, with no further spread outside of close contacts.

Last week it was revealed four mothers of newborns and two fathers contracted the virus at John Hunter Hospital.

That number has grown to 10, with four close family contacts testing positive.

Paul Craven from Hunter New England Health said there had been no infections in other patients, staff or babies in the neonatal unit but as a precaution, expecting mothers were being screened when entering the hospital.

Man extradited after alleged carjacking

A man has been extradited to NSW after an alleged carjacking and pursuit that saw him cross the border into Queensland.

Police said the 30-year-old driver allegedly assaulted a man who was sitting inside a BMW in Lismore on Saturday afternoon and then stole the car and drove off.

Officers tracked down the car and there was a pursuit through Murwillumbah with speeds of up to 200 kilometres an hour.

The driver crossed the border into Queensland and was later arrested and charged. He remains in custody and is due to front Tweed Heads local court today.
