NSW records 477 new COVID-19 cases, six deaths; Dominic Perrottet says residents have 'earned' state's reopening - ABC News

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet says the state's residents have "earned" the easing of COVID-19 restrictions which will come in effect tomorrow.

The state recorded 477 new COVID-19 infections and six deaths in the 24 hours to 8:00pm yesterday.

A large number of restrictions will be eased on Monday for those who are fully vaccinated after more than 100 days in lockdown.

Cafes, restaurants and bars will reopen, 10 people will be allowed to visit a home and the caps on numbers at weddings and funerals will increase dramatically.

Mr Perrottet said it would be a "big day" for the state.

"You've earned it. We're back in action tomorrow after more than 100 days making enormous sacrifices," he said.

"It's an exciting day for our state, but we need to do this in a safe way. Please treat everyone with respect and kindness."

Minister for Jobs and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said tomorrow's easing of restrictions was "not mission complete" and the state still had "a long way to go".

Health Minister Brad Hazzard urged people not to hassle staff about evidence of being vaccinated.

"Just be honest, be truthful and show the evidence if you're asked."

Mr Hazzard was asked if unvaccinated residents could leave the 12 local government areas (LGAs) from tomorrow, saying there will be no more LGAs of concern from tomorrow and that Sydney will be "one great city again".

The state now has 90.1 per cent of people aged over 16 who have received a first dose COVID-19 vaccine, and 72.8 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Of the six people who died, two were in their 50s, one in their 60s, and three in their 70s.

Five were not vaccinated and one had received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

A man in his 70s died at St George Hospital, where he acquired his infection, and is the third death linked to an outbreak at the hospital.

A man in his 70s died at Nepean Hospital, where he acquired his infection, and is the eighth death linked to an outbreak at the hospital.

There have been 431 COVID-19-related deaths in NSW since the Delta outbreak began in June and 487 in total since the start of the pandemic.

Deputy Premier Paul Toole said Tamworth, Port Macquarie, Wagga Wagga and Lismore residents would be the first to display their COVID-19 digital vaccination certificate on the Service NSW app.

Mr Toole said the regional pilot starting on Monday would focus on staff and visitors at a number of clubs and aged-care facilities, as well as selected taxi companies.

"Customers will have the convenience of checking in to a venue and showing proof of vaccination status on the one app. This is NSW leading the way with a pilot in the regions and helping to make life easier for our communities in the roadmap out of COVID," Mr Toole said.

Minister for Customer Services Victor Dominello said the 'VaxPass' app would "hopefully" be ready for a statewide rollout on October 18.

Until then, you can present your vaccination information via:

  • A paper certificate from Services NSW
  • A digital certificate on the Medicare app
  • A digital certificate in your Google or Apple wallet on your phone

Mr Perrottet said he wanted to open international borders as quickly and safely as possible to get stranded Australians home.

He said if the state was in a position to do so, it would help other states return residents home, particularly those with lower vaccination rates — "just Queensland should pay that bill," he said.
