Muscular atrophy, cholesterol and migraine medications added to PBS - PerthNow

Australians living with chronic health conditions will save up to $123,000 per year with the addition of three new medications on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

Patients suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy, high cholesterol and chronic migraines will now have access to the medications Evrysdi, Praluent and Ajovy at an affordable price.

According to federal Health Minister Greg Hunt, these medications were previously costing patients hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

The PBS is a program of the Australian government that subsidises prescription medication for citizens and permanent residents, making prescription medications financially accessible to all.

While the updated prices for Evrysdi, Praluent and Ajovy have not yet been made public, there will be a significant drop from August 1, 2021.

Without the PBS subsidy, treatment for spinal muscular atrophy without the assistance of Evrysdi costs around 100 Australians more than $123,000 a year.

Praluent costs 20,000 Australians living with severe hypercholesterolaemia, an elevation of cholesterol in the blood, about $6500 per year.

And Ajovy costs about 10,000 Australians suffering from chronic migraines about $6700 per year.

Alfred Hospital Cardiologist James Shaw welcomed the PBS listing of Praluent, saying that almost 100,000 heart attacks and strokes occurred in Australia each year.

“The PBS listing of an additional cholesterol-lowering therapy is very much welcomed,” he said.

While muscular atrophy, high cholesterol and migraine sufferers can now celebrate, some Australians who require prescription medications continue to miss out.

Many essential cancer and chemotherapy drugs, oral contraceptive pills, and corticosteroid nasal sprays remain unsubsidised.

Mr Hunt said the government intended to continue to transfer new medications onto the PBS.

Since 2013, more than 2700 new or amended listings have been put on the PBS.

Mr Hunt said that would continue and the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable access to medications remained “rock solid”.
