Video Transcript

KEN RICE: Giant Eagle is partnering with the Pittsburgh public schools to vaccinate teachers. A two day clinic will be held later this week at Heinz Field. Jennifer Borrasso joins us live. Now she's been talking to teachers. Jen, what are you hearing?

JENNIFER BORASSO: That's right. They are excited. They're relieved. And quite frankly, they were caught off guard by today's news. They received an email around 9:30 in the morning. They had to respond by noon. It happened fast, Ken. Pittsburgh public schools saying that Giant Eagle reached out to them about the vaccine opportunity here at Heinz Field.

RODNEY NECCIAI: We're very excited that every staff member will have an opportunity to be vaccinated within the next week.

JENNIFER BORASSO: Pittsburgh public school teachers who were not included in the Commonwealth's first wave of the Johnson and Johnson vaccines got an email Tuesday morning about signing up for two dose Pfizer vaccine through Giant Eagle at a clinic at Heinz Field.

JEN MAZZOCCO: So I was excited. I mean, I was really happy. I replied right away like, yes, please.

JON PARKER: I replied within seconds to that email. It was the best one I've gotten in a long time.

JENNIFER BORASSO: Giant Eagle will offer roughly 3,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine to any Pittsburgh public school staff member who wants it at the Thursday and Friday clinics. Right now, teachers and school staff are providing information for appointment times. Staff will receive a second dose of the Pfizer vaccine at Heinz Field in 21 days. School leaders tell me students will start phasing back into the building's April 6th.

JEN MAZZOCCO: I think we're all a little apprehensive about being in the classroom again, but I think we're all excited to go back.

RODNEY NECCIAI: We're trying to make sure that we're including all those that work directly with students first and foremost to give them that assurance that they need moving forward so that when we come back to school, everybody can really hit the ground running and paying attention.

JENNIFER BORASSO: The school district has been doing remote learning for nearly a year. Some expect there will be challenges.

JON PARKER: My concern now is, all right, how do we teach? How do I meet the kids that I haven't been able to meet? Can I see them in person? That person is so important for kids, see my seniors before they go off to college.

JENNIFER BORASSO: And Ken, on a side note, the Johnson and Johnson vaccine distribution for the district is being handled by the Mount Oliver Intermediate Unit. That clinic will happen later this week. Reporting live, Jennifer Borrasso, KDKA News.
