Home-made vaccine to boost rollout - PerthNow

Coronavirus vaccinations are underway in Papua New Guinea but doctors are warning of surging case numbers.

A small team of Australian medical professions have been dispatched to PNG as soaring infection rates push the country's health system to the brink.

A field hospital designed to deal with mild and moderate cases is being forced to deal with far more serious cases because of a shortage of beds elsewhere.

An additional field hospital is set to open on Monday.

Gary Nou is working on the frontline in PNG and says more medical staff are needed.

"We are in a perpetual state of disaster," Dr Nou told ABC radio.

Australia has provided 8000 doses of vaccines for frontline workers in PNG, but there are concerns about future supplies.

More than 507,000 Australians have now received their first coronavirus vaccine injections.

State and territory vaccination clinics have administered most of the doses (329,000) while general practitioners have given out 97,000 and another 80,000 have been delivered in aged care homes.

Authorities in Queensland are trying to contain a potential coronavirus outbreak a week out from Easter.

They have discovered an infected man did not throw a party for up to 25 guests as first reported.

Instead, the gathering was limited to the man's housemates and one other person, all of whom are now in quarantine.

Queensland Health is tracking down people who may have come into contact with the men at 24 exposure sites, asking them to isolate and get tested.

The potential for an outbreak has sparked a lockdown of hospitals, aged care facilities, prisons and disability service providers in the Brisbane City and Moreton Bay council areas.

Elsewhere, NSW is taking another step back to normal as more restrictions ease, including dropping a mandate on the wearing of masks.
