Here's what you need to know this morning.
New COVID-19 venues and times
NSW Health has released more venues visited by a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the Byron Bay area.
Anyone who visited at the following times is a close contact and should immediately self-isolate and seek testing.
They are:
- Lennox Head Surfit Gym on March 28, from 6:00am to 11:00am
- Suffolk Park’s Park Hotel/Motel on March 28 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm
- Pro Shop, Ballina Golf and Sports Club on March 28 from 2:25pm to 2:35pm.
In addition, visitors to all retail and takeaway shops on Lawson, Jonson, Browning and Fletcher streets on March 27 between 12:00pm and 4:00pm have been told to seek COVID-19 testing.
Union abandons taskforce over rider deaths
The Transport Workers' Union (TWU) and riders have formally withdrawn from the NSW Food Delivery Rider Taskforce citing a "sustained refusal to discuss regulation or tackle the root causes of high rider deaths and injuries".
They name key issues as economic and contractual pressures that force riders to work dangerously and fatigued, leading to injury or fatality.
The creation of the taskforce followed the tragic deaths of five food delivery riders in just two months last year, four of which occurred in Sydney.
"The continued silencing of workers' core concerns has led the TWU to conclude that the Taskforce was designed by the NSW Government as a front to divert attention away from the global push for regulation," the TWU said in a statement.
Royal Easter Show kicks off today
One of the biggest events on the state's agricultural calendar opens today, after a COVID-19 hiatus.
The Sydney Royal Easter Show will run for the next twelve days, showcasing a range of rural talent.
Up to 60,000 people are allowed through the gates each day and all tickets must be pre-purchased online.
The organisers said this year's show will be a big boost for farmers.
Double demerits warning
Drivers in NSW are being warned to be on their best behaviour, with double demerits now in force for the Easter Long weekend.
Hefty penalties apply for speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences right through to around midnight on Monday.
Police will also be targeting drink, drug and dangerous driving over the next few days.
Authorities are expecting the roads to be busy given COVID-19 restricted travel last Easter.
Bluesfest 2021 cancellation fury
Artists, stallholders, fans and industry heavyweights have expressed their "disgust" that Bluesfest 2021 was ordered to be axed just hours before it was set to begin amid COVID-19 cases in Byron Bay.
The iconic music festival was supposed to return today after a COVID hiatus, but Health Minister Brad Hazzard dashed the hopes of many after yesterday signing a public health order to bring the event to a grinding halt.
CEO of Live Performance Australia, Evelyn Richardson, said the festival had sustained a "$10 million loss" from the last-minute cancellation, which had seen many scrambling to recoup costs.
"We have people being turned away told go home and an operator that has been running that festival for 30 years who has had the festival shut down two years in a row in an environment where nobody can get insurance for that," she said.
