Federal Opposition on COVID-19 vaccine rollout: 'It's just taking too long'

Federal Labor has criticised the slower-than-expected pace of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, arguing it heightens the risk of new outbreaks.

The Federal Government had hoped to see 4 million people vaccinated by early April, but health officials now say they don't know when that milestone will be reached.

That's partly due to problems securing overseas doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, with just 700,000 doses delivered, despite an order for 3.8 million.

Labor frontbencher Jason Clare says the rollout needs to pick up pace.

"We're not going to get the economy revving at full speed again," he said.

"We're not going to be able to open up international borders, and get tourists in from around the world, until we get everybody vaccinated.

"That's my main concern, it's just taking too long. What's happened in Queensland is a reminder that we're just another outbreak away from another lockdown."
