No 'immediate connection' between cases in two Sydney quarantine guards

By Georgina Mitchell and Michaela Whitbourn

A second guard to test positive to COVID-19 at a Sydney quarantine hotel worked one shift in common with the first, although Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant has said there is "no immediate connection" between the pair.

New South Wales recorded 10 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, including a second security guard who worked at Sydney's Marriott Hotel.

The infection was the only case discovered after more than 700 people connected to the hotel were tested following an initial case in a guard who worked at the hotel reported earlier this week, which Dr Chant said was "reassuring".

“This is a very tricky virus," she said on Saturday afternoon. “The first security guard in effect led us to this second security guard. That’s the responsibility we all have ... to rock up and get this testing done."

Urgent genomic sequencing will be carried out this weekend to determine if the second guard has the same virus strain as the first, although Dr Chant warned the second guard's viral load was "quite low" so there may be issues with the ability to carry out the sequencing.

Brisbane braces for coronavirus spread amid rush to trace new cluster

By Lydia Lynch

A COVID-19 cluster spreading across Ipswich and Brisbane is expected to grow after thousands were swabbed at fever clinics on Saturday.

Many young people across Brisbane headed out to bars for a "last hurrah" on Saturday night fearing a lockdown was looming after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk introduced new restrictions on gatherings and aged care homes.

Queensland's disease detectives have been working around the clock to track down people who might have been exposed to the coronavirus after a supervisor at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre tested positive on Wednesday night.

A massive contact tracing, testing and quarantining operation was launched on Thursday and a further six people linked to the cluster returned positive results on Saturday morning.

Ms Palaszczuk is expected to provide an update on the situation on Sunday morning.

The Masked Singer production shut down after seven COVID-19 cases

By Ashleigh McMillan

The production of Channel 10 reality tv show The Masked Singer has been suspended due to a COVID-19 cluster, after a crew member tested positive to the virus this week.

There are now seven cases connected to the show's Melbourne set, the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed on Saturday night.

The entire production team has been placed in self-isolation, including host Osher Günsberg, judges Jackie O, Dave Hughes, Urzila Carlson, Dannii Minogue and the celebrity masked singers.

With Günsberg also the host of reality TV show The Bachelor, the announcement that all cast members are to self-isolate could put any remaining filming in peril. Production of the dating show was previously suspended in March due to COVID-19 fears.

A spokeswoman for the Victorian health department said "early investigations have determined that the site should close", with all those at the Docklands studio since Wednesday to isolate until further advised.

'No jab, no play' the wrong approach to COVID-19 vaccine, doctors warn

By Dana McCauley

Doctors are urging governments not to compel Australians to get a COVID-19 vaccine, warning the fast-tracked approval process could create a risk of harmful side effects.

Australian Medical Association President Omar Khorshid said while the peak body was "very supportive of vaccination generally because of its extensive science behind the safety, it's not going to be the case for a COVID vaccine, at least initially."

Dr Khorshid said tying vaccination to access to services such as childcare, school or social security payments, as state and federal governments do with paediatric vaccines under 'no jab, no play' and 'no jab, no pay' laws, could not be justified with a brand new COVID-19 vaccine.

"We have to acknowledge it is a rushed approval process and even if the phase three trials on this Oxford vaccine go really well, it's still not absolutely proven that it is safe, not as proven as is normally the case," he said.

"That does increase the risk that there might be rare side effects ... that we just don't know about."
