Queensland records two more COVID-19 cases amid new outbreak at Wacol youth detention centre - 9News

Queensland has recorded two new cases of coronavirus, one day after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced sweeping new restrictions for the state amid a new outbreak.

A list of more than 40 sites across Brisbane, Ipswich and Logan visited by positive cases has been released by Queensland Health.

Coles, Woolworths, Bunnings and Westfield Carindale are among the locations subject to the public health alert, with anyone who has visited these locations and experiencing symptoms urged to get tested.

Both of today's new cases are relatives of workers at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre in Wacol, after six cases were linked to the centre yesterday.

One is a young boy, who Ms Palaszczuk said was doing well.

It brings the total number of cases associated with the cluster to nine, after a female staff member worked five shifts there while infectious last week.

"This is a good result but, of course, we're not out of the woods yet," Ms Palaszczuk told this morning's press conference.

Ms Palaszczuk has delayed a scheduled trip to the state's Far North until next week to focus on tackling the ongoing outbreak.

The detention centre's entire workforce of more than 500 staff has been stood down and replaced with a new team in an effort to stem the outbreak.

There have been no cases among those detained there, with health authorities still awaiting results of 20 youths.

Of the centre's more than 500 staff, 202 have so far had their coronavirus test results returned.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is urging any Queenslanders with symptoms to get a COVID-19 test. (9News)

"I have asked the department to prioritise the testing of the staff members and the young people and I would like to update Queensland tomorrow with a complete list of the results of those tests," Ms Palaszczuk said.

Authorities are attempting to track down a number of young people who had been released from the detention centre before the outbreak was uncovered.

Many of the young people have travelled large distances back to their home towns across Queensland.

The state's Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young said work was underway to track down those young people and get them tested.

It is still "too early" to link the new cluster at the Brisbane Youth Detention Facility in Wacol to any prior outbreaks, Dr Young said.

She told the press conference that genomic sequencing is currently underway, but no results have yet been released.

The sequencing will determine what strain of the virus is present in the new cases.

Health authorities are urging Queenslanders to get tested with even the mildest symptoms, as Queensland Health released a list of more than 40 sites visited by positive cases.

"We would like to see more tests being conducted," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"I understand it is bitterly cold out there at the moment but, of course, if you do have any symptoms, now is the time to get tested."

The premier also advised the public to be especially vigilant when out in public and to avoid large crowds.

However, she remained adamant that it continued to be safe to attend venues so long as they had an appropriate COVID-safe plan in place.

A cap on gatherings, announced yesterday, remains in place.

Gatherings in homes and outdoors have been capped at 10 in Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Scenic Rim, Lockyer Valley, Moreton Bay and Redlands.

Everywhere else, gatherings at homes and outdoors are limited to 30.
