NSW records 10 new COVID-19 cases, two remain under investigation - Sydney Morning Herald

New South Wales has recorded 10 new cases of coronavirus cases on Saturday, and issued an alert for a western Sydney shopping centre after it emerged a person visited the centre twice while infectious.

A security guard working at Sydney’s Marriott Hotel, one of the hotels where returned travellers are placed into quarantine, has tested positive for COVID-19.

News of the case came after the state reported nine new cases in the latest 24-hour reporting period. More information is expected to be released on this case later on Saturday.

Dr Jeremy McAnulty from NSW Health said the state carried out 30,810 tests in the 24 hours to 8pm Friday, a slight drop from the 32,580 tests carried out in the previous reporting period.

Of the nine cases, “four are close contacts of previously reported cases whose source is under investigation”, Dr McAnulty said.

One case is a household contact of a previously reported confirmed case linked to the Tangara School cluster, and two cases are household contacts of cases linked to the Bankstown funeral cluster, he said.

Two cases remain under investigation.

Dr McAnulty said a previously reported case attended Westfield Shopping Centre at Mt Druitt twice while infectious.

Anyone who attended the shopping centre on Wednesday August 12 from 12pm to 12.30pm or Friday August 14 from 11am to 12pm should monitor for symptoms and get tested should symptoms develop.

A medical centre in Sydney's Cabramatta is closed after one of the nine confirmed cases of COVID-19 announced in NSW on Saturday attended the centre.

NSW Health said the person attended Cabramatta Family Practice on John St Cabramatta on 20 August.

"The practice is closed and has been cleaned and everyone at the facility at the time is being contacted," NSW Health said.

The cluster linked to Tangara School in Cherrybrook now stands at 26, while the Bankstown cluster is at 76, each increasing by one case.

The figure on Saturday came just a day after NSW reported one new case and continued the trend of single-digit daily increases reported throughout the week.

Friday also marked the first time in two weeks there were no new COVID-19 cases with no known contact to confirmed cases or clusters, which are the mystery cases that concern NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant.

Victoria's numbers continue to trend downwards, with 182 new cases and 13 deaths reported on Saturday, including the death of a man aged in his 50s.

Ten of the 13 deaths are linked to aged care, Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said, while 30 of the 182 new cases are "mystery cases" without a known source.

Victoria's Chief Health Officer, Professor Brett Sutton, said the state is on a trend to hit less than 150 new daily coronavirus cases next week.

''The overall trend is positive," Professor Sutton said. "Next week we, if we carry on like this, we will see numbers below 150."

More to come.
