Coronavirus pills undergo 'significant' importation spike at Australian border - 7NEWS.com.au

Shipments of potentially dangerous substances and medications claiming to offer protection from coronavirus are being intercepted at the border.

The Australian Border Force (ABF) on Monday said there had been a “significant spike” in the detection of several medical supplies related to the pandemic.

Of particular concern was a traditional Chinese medicine ingredient - which can also be a precursor to the drug ice - and an anti-malaria drug touted by US President Donald Trump.

“There are serious health risks associated with taking medication that has not been prescribed for you by a medical health professional,” ABF Assistant Commissioner Erin Dale said.

“It is illegal to bring these substances into Australia without the proper permits and I strongly urge Australians against importing these items.”

The two problem medical supplies are herbal medicine Ephedra and anti-malaria drug Hydroxychloriquine.

Ephedra is believed to ease the symptoms of COVID-19.

However, it can also be used to make the drug ice and is therefore a prohibited substance.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has also flagged Ephedra as a dangerous substance due to several adverse side effects.

ABF officers also say they have seized more than 26,000 Hydroxychloroquine and Chloroquine tablets since the start of the year.

The TGA says the drug poses a serious risk to patients and could lead to sudden heart attacks and irreversible eye damage.
