Sharp fall in Qld flu vaccinations: AMA - 7NEWS.com.au

Demand for flu shots has plunged in Queensland, despite authorities pleading with people to protect themselves.

GP clinics are reporting a dramatic drop in demand for flu vaccinations, compared with the same time last year.

President Dr Dilip Dhupelia fears the trend could result in a new health crisis, as coronavirus restrictions ease.

"If you get the flu, you are at greater risk of getting COVID-19, which would be a double whammy. Having both would make you extremely ill," he warned on Tuesday.

"We need people to get their flu shot now so we don't come out of one crisis only to face another one."

So far this year, flu cases are down thanks in large part to people being ordered to stay home to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Just nine people were diagnosed with influenza last week, a mere fraction of the 900 cases health officials would expect each week at this time of year.

But Dr Dhupelia says flu cases are likely to spike alongside the easing of coronavirus restrictions.

He said people shouldn't be scared about going their GP for a flu shot, with clinics working under strict infection control measures.

Queenslanders can also get their flu shots at pharmacies.

AAP is seeking comment from pharmacy groups and more detail from the AMA.
