A vaccine has been called the holy grail and Australians are being warned life can’t return completely to normal until one is developed.

That goal is a little closer thanks to groundbreaking work being done in Perth, where a lab will conduct the first human trials.

Perth-based Linear Clinical Research will trial a potential vaccine being developed to help the body produce antibodies to fight the coronavirus.

One of the first vaccine trials in the world to help stop the spread COVID-19 will begin in about six weeks.

Doctors and researchers have put the call out for volunteers to come forward to be a part of the first human trials.

In simple terms, the vaccine mimics the shape and spikes of the virus, so that a person develops an immunity to the disease and can fight it off if they were to catch it.

Who’s needed?

For phase one of the clinical trial, researchers need 90 healthy people between the ages of 18 and 55 to volunteer.

Forty-eight healthy older people aged above 55 are also being asked to come forward.

Twenty per cent of participants will be injected twice with a placebo, while the remaining 80 per cent will be injected in two rounds with the real vaccine.

Doctors and scientists will be looking at different dose levels of the vaccine, how patients react, whether their immune systems strengthen, and above all else, whether it’s safe.

The fastest vaccine ever approved took four years to get the green light.

If this trial is successful, West Australians will have access to the medication first.

While there is still a long wait ahead, experts believe the goal of finding a vaccine just got a little closer.
