Five new coronavirus cases confirmed in NSW - ABC News

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has confirmed just five new cases of coronavirus in NSW, bringing the state's total to 2,980.

Today's cases include two new infections at Anglicare Newmarch House in Sydney's west — a resident and a staff member.

That brings the total infections at the aged care facility to 44, after 15 staff and 29 residents contracted the virus when a staff member worked six shifts with symptoms.

Chief medical officer Kerry Chant said two health-care workers were among today's confirmed cases.

A male NSW paramedic based in Liverpool has contracted the virus, and health authorities said the source of his infection was unknown.

A nurse at Sydney Adventist Hospital was also among the coronavirus cases confirmed today.

Dr Chant said today's small number of cases was a positive result, given more than 5,600 tests were conducted across the state to 8pm last night.

"That compares 4,291 tests in the period before, so I'm very pleased with that testing," Dr Chant said.

Dr Chant said 21 confirmed cases of coronavirus were currently receiving treatment in intensive care, while 15 people were being ventilated.

Ms Berejiklian said steadying cases were a result of the community's strong uptake of social distancing measures.

"We know that these restrictions we've had in place are working," she said.

More to come.
