A British microbiologist has been injected with a potential coronavirus vaccine in the first human trial in the UK administered by a major university.
Elisa Granato was one of the first two volunteers in the University of Oxford trial, in which about 1100 people will participate.

“I’m a scientist, so I wanted to try to support the scientific process wherever I can,” Granato, 32, told the BBC.
The vaccine, ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, is a weakened version of a common cold virus that causes infections in chimpanzees, Oxford said.
The virus has been genetically changed so it is impossible for it to grow in humans.
Healthy people aged 18-55 are eligible for the trial.
The study will determine if the vaccine causes “unacceptable side effects” and “induces good immune responses”, with participants to document any symptoms in an e-diary.
Lead researcher and vaccinology professor Sarah Gilbert told the BBC she has “a high degree of confidence in this vaccine”.

But the university concedes a “significant proportion” of vaccines which reach clinical trials don’t work.
“If we are unable to show that the vaccine is protective against the virus, we would review progress, examine alternative approaches, such as using different numbers of doses, and would potentially stop the program,” it said.
UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock says the government is “throwing everything” at developing a coronavirus vaccine.
