A pregnant 28-year-old nurse has died of coronavirus - Cosmopolitan UK

Doctors have managed to save the baby of a pregnant 28-year-old nurse who sadly died from coronavirus. Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong passed away on Sunday in Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, where she had worked for five years.

A hospital trust spokesperson told the BBC the nurse's "child was doing very well" but shared no further information. It is not known exactly how far into her pregnancy Mary was when she died. According to a fundraising page set up to support Mary's family, the baby girl has also been named Mary after her late mother.

The young mother-to-be first tested positive for COVID-19 on 5 April, but when her symptoms worsened on 7 April, she was admitted to hospital. She died less than a week later. Her husband AJ has also been tested for the virus, and is currently self-isolating.

On the GoFundMe page, Mary was described as "a beloved sister, aunty, wife, mother, work colleague and friend. Mary was a blessing to everyone she came across and her love, care and sincerity will be irreplaceable," it read.

So far, more than £97,000 has been raised for the young woman's family, far surpassing the original target of £2,000. "I hope these donations go some way to helping little Mary and Mary Mo's husband have a brighter future," wrote one person who donated.

"Thank you for all that you have done for the NHS, and caring for everyone else. Much love to your beautiful family," posted another. The funds raised are intended to "be a starting point to support [Mary's family] financially".

"You will forever be in our hearts Mary. Your memories are still with us and we will cherish them forever until we meet again. We will forever miss you," the fundraising page signed off.

The chief executive of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, David Carter, described Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong as a "fantastic nurse and a great example of what we stand for in this trust".

Our thoughts are with Mary's family at this very difficult time.
