Victoria has recorded one locally acquired case of COVID-19, a person who was quarantining as the primary close contact of a known case.
Key points:
- No new exposure sites have been linked to the new infection
- Three cases were detected in hotel quarantine from 21,595 test results
- Police are stepping up patrols on the New South Wales border after Sydney became a red zone on Friday
Melbourne has been on high alert since a man tested positive after returning from Sydney last weekend.
The Oakleigh man, in his 60s, tested positive on Thursday after returning from Sydney on Sunday, and his co-worker at the Sandringham Dry Cleaners also tested positive.
The man had travelled to Sydney to visit his daughter in the suburb of West Hoxton, a family gathering which has been dubbed a "superspreader" event by officials in New South Wales. The suburb was in a green zone at the time.
He then worked while infectious at the dry cleaners, including one day where it is understood he had symptoms.
Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton yesterday said genomic testing had confirmed that the two men had the Delta strain of the virus.
No new exposure sites have been linked to today's new case.
The one local case and three infections in hotel quarantine were detected from 21,595 test results processed on Friday.
There were 19,807 vaccine doses administered in state-run centres, taking the total number of jabs done by the state to more than 1 million. There had been 986,341 doses administered in the state as part of the Commonwealth on Thursday.
Police have increased patrols at Victoria's border with New South Wales to enforce the travel bans announced during the week.
Greater Sydney, including Central Coast and Blue Mountains, and Wollongong, including Shellharbour, have been declared red zones from 1:00am Friday.
It means non-Victorians who have been in the red zones are not able to enter the state without an exemption, and residents must quarantine for 14 days if they return home.
All of the current red zones have been retrospectively declared orange zones between June 11 and Friday morning, meaning anyone who was there during that time needs to get tested on arrival in Victoria and isolate until they receive a negative result.
Victoria Police said there were about 260 officers dedicated to border patrols who would support the current vehicle patrols already working around border areas.
