Private sector will be brought in to speed up vaccination rollout

Big banks, large mining companies and other private businesses will be asked to vaccinate their staff later in the year as the new COVID-19 vaccine taskforce commander works to speed up the rollout.

Government made right call on AstraZeneca: Qld senator

Minister for Northern Australia, Matt Canavan, says the PM made the right call on opening up the AstraZeneca vaccine to people under the age of 60.
“I do believe patients should make their own choices about their medical care,” Mr Canavan told the Today show just moments ago.
“Just like any medical treatment, you are told the risks. You are told, ‘This could do X, Y and Z.’”

Yesterday, the Government said under 40s who are not yet eligible for their recommended COVID-19 vaccine, Pfizer, are able to request the AstreZeneca jab from their GP after discussing the very rare risk of blood clots.
However, the Australian Medical Association has urged under 60s to wait for Pfizer.
“It’s not unusual in the medical sphere for there to be different opinions,” Mr Canavan said. “That’s why we have the term ‘second opinion’.
“Likewise with a new virus, it’s not surprising to me there are different views. Ultimately, the patient decides. It’s your arm, it will be your health [and] side effects. You make that decision looking at all the risks. If you think you can do it, go for it.”
Bunnings, gym among NSW’s newest exposure sites

Anyone who attended the service desk at the Bunnings in Ashfield in Sydney’s inner west on Thursday, June 24 between 1.30pm and 8pm is considered a close contact and must immediately get tested and isolate for 14 days regardless of the result.
The same applies for anyone who was greeted as they entered the store between 3.50pm and 4pm on the same day.
Meanwhile, anyone who attended Uniqlo at Pitt Street Mall on Monday, June 21 between 10.15am and 11.15am or the Fitness First Gym on George Street in North Strathfield (in Sydney’s inner west) on Friday, June 25 between 11am and 1.30pm also has to immediately get tested and isolate for a fortnight.
A number of other exposure sites made their way onto NSW’s official list late last night, including popular bus routes to and from the city’s inner west and a gelato bar in the inner north shore.
Authorities are reminding NSW residents that there are more than 350 COVID-19 testing locations across the state.

Victorian government looks to decriminalise sex work

Victoria will join a growing list of jurisdictions in the world to decriminalise the sex industry if state MPs adopt recommendations aimed at safeguarding workers and reducing stigma.
Andrews government ministers are considering legislative reforms that Consumer Affairs Minister Melissa Horne said would protect sex workers.

“Sex work is a legitimate form of work and should be regulated through standard business laws, like all other industries in the state,” Ms Horne said.
“Decriminalising sex work in Victoria will ensure it’s safe work – a basic human right that everyone deserves.”

Here’s everything you need to know before we jump into today’s rolling coverage.
- Around 12 million Australians are waking up in lockdown this morning after south-east Queensland joined NSW, WA and the Northern Territory in issuing stay-at-home orders to curb local COVID-19 outbreaks.
- NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is warning the number of cases in her state could “bounce around” in coming days. Yesterday, the NSW recorded 19 cases of COVID-19 in the community. At least 5000 people have been considered close contacts and a small business support package has been announced.
- Queensland’s lockdown is a blow for the state’s tourism industry given it’s the school holidays. Authorities are concerned about a 19-year-old hospital receptionist was out and about in the Brisbane community for 10 days before testing positive to the highly contagious Delta coronavirus strain. There are reports she wasn’t vaccinated.
- Residents of the Perth and Peel regions of Western Australia are waking up to the second day of their four day snap lockdown (with three cases linked to the state’s local outbreak so far). Meanwhile, Territorians are waking up to their third full day of lockdown. The total number of infections linked to the Central Australian mining cluster is now 10.
- The Australian Medical Association is urging people under 60 to wait for the Pfizer vaccine if they can, despite a snap decision from Prime Minister Scott Morrison to allow people of any age to request the AstraZeneca jab from their GP. Pfizer is the recommended jab for people under 60, but so far under 40s have not yet become eligible for that vaccine under the Government’s staged rollout.
- And in sports news, Australian tennis star and World No.1 Ash Barty has advanced to the second round of Wimbledon. England has also ended a 55-year drought to beat Germany in the European Championship quarter finals.
