COVID-19 found in wastewater across Melbourne’s northeast suburbs - 7NEWS.com.au

Residents and recent visitors to fourteen suburbs across Melbourne’s northeast are being urged to remain on high alert for symptoms associated with COVID-19.

The Department of Health issued a fresh warning on Saturday night after viral fragments of COVID-19 were detected in a wastewater sample taken from a sewer catchment on June 10.

The catchment is for about 33,000 people across Heidelberg and surrounding areas.

The department said this new detection was “of interest” as there is currently no confirmed COVID-19 cases in the areas.

There are, however, multiple exposure sites in and near the catchment.

“The unexpected detections may be due to someone who has had COVID-19 but is no longer infectious continuing to ‘shed’ the virus, or it may be due to an active but undiagnosed infectious case,” the department said.

Residents and visitors to the following suburbs between June 9 and 10, who have or develop COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild, are urged to get tested.

Symptoms include fever, sore throat, cough, shortness of breath and loss or change in sense of smell or taste.

The suburbs include Balwyn North, Bulleen, Bundoora, Eaglemont, Heidelberg, Heidelberg Heights, Ivanhoe, Ivanhoe East, Kew East, Macleod, Rosanna, Viewbank, Watsonia and Yallambie.

“The wastewater testing program is designed as an early warning system and a cautious approach is always taken when these detections are found,” the department said.

“The Department of Health has increased wastewater testing in the area and will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

More information about the wastewater testing program can be found on the Department of Health website.
